5 things I learnt as an apprentice

5 things to know about apprenticeships

Are you ready to ‘hit the ground running’ and move straight into the world of work? Have you got a specific idea of what you want to do?

Yes? Great. An apprenticeship is a job with training, you will learn while you work and gain a qualification. Find out more.

You can take apprenticeships at different levels, starting with Level 2 or above.

If you’re not quite ready, some colleges and smaller training centres offer ‘work-preparation’ courses called study programmes. Sometimes these are called pre-apprenticeship programmes. This is a great option if you haven’t got any formal qualifications.

Level 2 apprenticeships are one to two year programmes.

  • You might need some GCSEs - it will depend on the type of apprenticeship and level. It is possible to do maths and English qualifications alongside your apprenticeship. Employers will also look at any work experience.
  • These apprenticeships will earn you the equivalent of 5 GCSES, pay no less than £7.55 per hour and will give you a minimum of 20 days annual leave.
  • You can complete a Level 3 with more study.
