Every pupil, and their parents, should have access to good-quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information.

  • By the age of 14, all pupils should have accessed and used information about career paths and the labour market to inform their own decisions on study options.
  • Parents should be encouraged to access and use information about labour markets and future study options to inform their support to their children.

Labour Market Information is data that can be used as a tool in exploring and interpreting the labour market for individuals to make career choices. Information is provided both nationally and locally and can be used to plan and guide careers sessions by covering future opportunities, in demand roles, current sector shortages and the skills required for these, as well as other statistics such as expected pay scales. National labour market information gives information about UK industries and employment, whereas local labour market information focuses on specific regions.

The LMI for All website LMI For All – LMI For All is a good place to begin resourcing labour market information and is used as a source by careers websites such as iCould and UExplore. Included on the website are some learning units for careers staff and teachers to access. Local information may be provided by your local authority.

Providing information to students about LMI, including access to local labour market information and how to use it as a career planning tool allows them to understand which jobs will be in demand in their area, expected pay, prospects and security.

Parents can be directed to website information or provided with local information at careers events.
