All pupils should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.

By the age of 16, every pupil should have had a meaningful encounter* with providers of the full range of learning opportunities, including sixth forms, colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers. This should include the opportunity to meet both staff and pupils.

By the age of 18, all pupils who are considering applying for university should have had at least two visits to universities to meet staff and pupils.

* A ‘meaningful’ encounter is one in which the student has an opportunity to explore what it’s like to learn in that environment.

All students should have access to information about every post 16 and post 18 option in order for them to understand all routes that are open to them. This should both academic and vocational pathways, and learning via 6th form, colleges, universities, apprenticeships, and workplaces.

Information can be shared in the form of:

  • Visits to colleges and universities
  • Visits/talks/activities from colleges and universities
  • Impactful careers fairs
  • Apprenticeship information and activities
  • Lessons around the range of qualifications and study options for further learning Post 16 and Post 18

Encounters with providers should include interaction between all parties so that students can actively engage and have the opportunity to ask questions and explore options. Students should have an understanding of learning within each environment.

Many organisations will offer outreach and awareness programmes specifically designed for interaction with students, so contact your local providers for information on what may be available in your area.
